Watch: ‘Intermission Bench’: The first limited-edition furniture piece by NØDE design studio

The 'Intermission Bench' is produced out of a single piece of 20 mm thick, airplane-grade aluminium plate, which was laboriously hand-carved to hollow out the seating area and achieve its final texture.

Aluminium takes on a luxurious lustre in the Intermission Bench, the first limited-edition furniture piece produced by NØDE design studio in Cape Town. Headed by industrial designers Charles Haupt and Gerrit Giebel, NØDE is the result of Bronze Age Studio branching out into the production of metal furniture and interior products. The studio’s approach emphasizes human interaction with materials and surfaces, as well as constant development into methods of hand cutting textures into metal. This has been refined to a point where NØDE is able to hand-craft, and even sculpt, in metals such as aluminium.

The Intermission Bench is produced out of a single piece of 20 mm thick, airplane-grade aluminium plate, which was laboriously hand-carved to hollow out the seating area and achieve its final texture. But first the aluminium was heat-treated to several hundred degrees Celsius and bent with an 80-ton press. With its anodised finish, the result is an object of simplistic, yet sculptural shape that is refined in its form.
