Special mention for Chuma Maweni at 100% Design South Africa 2019 Awards
Chuma Maweni presented his collection of ceramic vessels and furniture at 100% Design South Africa 2019 in Johannesburg, garnering a special mention in the Product Design category of the event’s distinguished annual awards.
Chuma’s precisely formed teardrop cannisters, burnished pots and Imbizo furniture series were on display alongside a new collection of tableware. The Cape Town-based artist has developed a unique design language that combines graphic silhouettes, crisply ridged surfaces, tactile patterns and traditional African burnishing. His new crockery is a striking, simplified evolution of his style, built around the recurring motif of a circular handle.
Chuma won the 2018 Object That Moves Award, sponsored by 100% Design South Africa, at the Design Foundation Awards earlier this year. His prize was a stand at the platform’s flagship event, alongside Decorex, at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, where he got to showcase the Imbizo table and stool set that gave rise to a whole new direction into ceramic furniture.
He gave live demonstrations of his craft, throwing pots and carving into his pieces at the stand. Chuma’s ceramic stools and side-tables have become sought-after pieces by collectors and interior designers, and have been exhibited to international audiences at The Salon Art and Design in New York, Design Miami and Christie’s Annual design Auction.
