Coral & Hive’s monumental woven masterpiece for Xigera’s interiors
Bringing plush, handwoven texture to Xigera Safari Camp’s interiors are 37 large-scale rugs made from karakul wool and other natural fibres by Coral & Hive, based in Somerset West outside Cape Town. Every rug was custom-designed for Xigera using wool that has been hand-dyed, spun and woven with immaculate attention to detail.
The studio uses purpose-built traditional looms, including the largest known loom on the African continent – which enabled them to weave the monumental, one-of-a-kind carpet in Xigera’s library. The design of the library rug was inspired by West African Kubu cloth and thin-spun to render a finer degree of detail.
Coral & Hive employs some of the most talented weavers in South Africa, most of them women, whose skills have been passed down for generations. Their goal is to inspire people to make considered choices, and to understand how, where and by whom their furnishings are made. It is an ethically operated company for whom sustainability and craftsmanship are essential to create visually exciting yet soft and sensual rugs.
