Chuma Maweni produces largest ceramic series to date for Xigera

Using his phenomenally successful Imbizo series of ridged ceramic furniture as a departure point, Maweni translated the forms into tableware for the dining room and coffee sets for the guest suites.

Guests at Xigera Safari Lodge will interact with Chuma Maweni’s distinctive ceramics in almost every part of the property. Comprising more than 70 pieces, it is his largest single body of work to date.

Chuma Maweni Xigera process

Using his phenomenally successful Imbizo series of ridged ceramic furniture as a departure point, Maweni translated the forms into tableware for the dining room and coffee sets for the guest suites. Multiple side-tables and stools are dotted around every seating area of the main lodge, each one completely unique in shape, glaze colour and patterning.

For this project he developed a new version of the Imbizo (meaning “gathering”) side-tables with a striking geometric profile.

A large writing desk with carved wooden top graces the library, while a cocktail table and stool set can be found in the wine cellar.

Every single piece at Xigera was skillfully hand-thrown by Maweni himself. The volume of orders enabled him to branch out and take a studio space of his own inside the Port of Cape Town, where he could often be found working until the early hours of the morning to produce the collection. His dedication to precision and meticulous attention to detail are evident in the crisp lines and symmetrical silhouettes of his ceramic pieces.
