For Design Miami 2015, Southern Guild presents the work of 11 South African designers. Artisanal and cerebral, the pieces on show include scarified ceramic vessels by Andile Dyalvane and painted bronze sculptures by Justine Mahoney that talk to her upbringing in South Africa in the 1970s and 80s. Tattooed Sleeve by Laurie Wiid van Heerden and Ceramic Matters, and Fiona Blackfish by Porky Hefer make their anticipated debut at the fair. Other highlights include David Krynauw’s chandelier, Haywire Panga-Panga & Copper, and the Jeppestown Waiting Bench.
With Southern Guild’s designer-makers working in very personal, exploratory ways, the gallery’s presentation holds deep cultural relevance while stimulating invigorating discourse.
