For Design Days Dubai’s second edition, Southern Guild presents iconic pieces by South Africa’s most compelling designers and artists. Porky Hefer’s Audrey Esca is a centrepiece, the first of his collectible leather-donning pieces. Audrey is clad in offcuts of leather that resemble medieval armour, based on the pangolin – the armoured ant eater.
Anchoring the booth are Dokter and Misses’ Kassena Server in peach, part of the Kassena Town series originally inspired by the hand-painted homes of the Kassena people from northern Ghana; a large Turned Table by Gregor Jenkin, South Africa’s foremost furniture designer working in metal; and a Mandala chandelier made from ball-chain by Willowlamp.
South Africa’s vibrant ceramic sector is represented with vessels by Andile Dyalvane, porcelain wall panels by Christina Bryer, and painted ceramic sculptures by Ardmore. Collectible furniture by Vogel and Plunkett, Bronze Age, Conrad Hicks, Egg Designs, Joe Paine, Laurie Wiid van Heerden and Okha are shown alongside objects by Michaella Janse van Vuuren and wall-based works by leading contemporary artists Brett Muray and Wayne Barker.
