Southern Guild takes part in the inaugural edition of Design Days Dubai, the first fair dedicated to collectible design in the Middle East, in 2012. with an exhibition of collectible work by 16 South African designers.
The gallery’s stand introduces Dubai collectors and visitors to the rich and varied work of the country’s leading talents and traiblazers in the emerging category of collectible design. Highlights include the Crop Circle table by John Vogel, one of South Africa’s foremost furniture designers, whose work has helped define a distinctly local vernacular. Resembling a spine, the table is actually made up of interlocking drum-like pedestals carved from Jacaranda wood and snaking in a curved formation. The Foundrie Table by Gregor Jenkin is an elegant feat of engineering and craftsmanship, spanning over four metres long and supported by tapered cabriole legs, while Dylan Lewis’ Gesture brings the same nuance and tension he is known for in his wildlife sculptures to the mythological and manifest propensities of the human hand. Nearby, the Blue Label rug is expert carpet maker Paco Pakdoust’s translation of painter Wayne Barker’s artwork into the medium of hemp and silk.
Southern Guild’s collection also includes unusual ceramics by Ardmore, Astrid Dahl and Christina Bryer; sculptural works in bronze by Bronze Age and Guy du Toit; handcrafted wooden furniture by Koop and Vogel and Plunkett; contemporary furniture and lighting by Haldane Martin, Willowlamp and Okha; and sculptural objects by Marchand van Tonder and Michaella Janse van Vuuren,.
