Leather- and cane-enrobed pieces become the next explorations of the human-scale nesting environments with which Porky has become synonymous.
Monstera Deliciosa, Volume I is the first solo show by Cape Town designer Porky Hefer, whose underwater fantasy-scape welcomes visitors on an adventurous journey of discovery, where leather- and cane-enrobed pieces become the next explorations of the human-scale nesting environments with which he has become synonymous.
Sponsored by Woodheads leather merchants, the monumental show includes a crocodile donning avocado leather and a puffer fish woven with Kooboo Cane by the Cape Town Society for the Blind. The six pieces have all been produced using unique local artisanal skills that include weaving, stitching and splicing. “It’s about protecting local crafts so that these traditions don’t die out,” Hefer explains. Says Southern Guild co-founder Julian McGowan, “Not many people are doing environmentally-inspired pieces of this nature and especially at this scale. Hefer’s work pushes boundaries and perceptions of what art and design are, and ultimately what furniture is and can be.”
