Idangatye, meaning ‘flame’ in Xhosa, premieres new work by ceramic artist Madoda Fani that illustrates his development and growth as an artist and sculptor. Bold and emblazoned with character, his work carries a dramatically unique sensibility, with his smoke-fired vessels following a contemporary approach to the age-old medium.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world, Fani’s curvaceous, coiled forms echo those found in nature, while the detailed hand-carved and burnished surfaces reference insect forms and cattle – the elegant and refined patterns speaking of his lifelong fascinations and his respect for cultural rituals.

In parallel, Southern Guild presents new work by fellow ceramicist Chuma Maweni, who recently started his own studio, producing high-quality ceramics depicting his spirit as an artist, exploring traditional craft with a fresh voice.
