Based in Cotonou, Benin, Dominique Zinkpè is an artist working in a variety of media, including installation, drawing, painting, sculpture and video. He was born in 1969 in Cotonou and studied at the Centre Culturel Français. In 1993, he had his first exhibition at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Cotonou, and was chosen to represent Benin at the Grapholies exhibition in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where he was awarded the Young African Talent Award later that year.

Zinkpè’s work is inspired by his culture, religion and animism, from which the magical universe of his characters emanates. His paintings often depict struggling figures, images of fertility, desire and motherhood. His sculptures are frequently made of coiled burlap and assemblages of carved wooden Ibeji dolls that evoke the Yoruba concept of twinship.

Zinkpé was awarded the prestigious UMOA prize at the Dakar Biennale in 2002. His works have been showcased on five continents and are part of many prestigious public and private collections, including the Zinsou Foundation (Benin), Blachère Foundation (France), Zeitz MOCAA (South Africa) and Sindika Dokolo collection (Angola).

In 2023, he was shortlisted for the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize alongside 29 other artists, with his piece, The Watchers.
