“This is my classroom,” says artist Stanislaw Trzebinski about his current body of work, ‘Solastalgia’. “I chose not to go to art school so I learn through making.” At an Artist Walkabout today, he spoke about the trials and errors he encountered along the way, letting go of the feeling that he is “cheating” by designing forms digitally, and the problem-solving and camaraderie of working within the Cape Town artisan community.

This remarkably produced exhibition is on show until 11 November, and we’ll be taking his work to @designmiami in Nov/Dec and @expochicago next year.

Using a variety of experimental techniques, @trzebinski_sculpture has invited a futuristic alchemy into the making of the works in his current solo, 'Solastalgia'. The use of 3D-printed models along with the ancient lost-wax bronze cast method represents a distinctive convergence of past and present. Colour has also become an explorative instrument for the artist. While traditional bronze patinas result in a muted range of browns, greens and greys, the use of patina tints has allowed the artist to develop a hallucinogenic palette of magenta, metallic green, and vivid aquamarine.

'Solastalgia' is on view until 10 November.

Born in Kinshasa in 1980, Patrick Bongoy’s work has largely reinterpreted the ongoing human and environmental erosion, violent economic extraction, and forced migration in his native DRC. His current solo, 'Unseen Dimensions of the Known' (on view until
29 September) extends towards themes of wider resonance with the human condition, and what personal or collective liberation means.

Deirdre Prins-Solani is an internationally sought-after specialist in education, culture and heritage. She is a facilitator for the global capacity-building programme of @unesco's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in which capacity she has conducted training across Africa, the Caribbean and Asia Pacific. Her current research explores the ways in which living heritage, memory and interior worlds can inform transformative and inclusive urban planning.

Malika Ndlovu is a poet, performer and applied arts practitioner whose contribution to South African culture spans over 25 years. Her words and productions have appeared on pages and stages across the globe. Her varied endeavours embody her belief that "creativity is medicine to us all – whether we access this to produce great art for the public or to heal and grow ourselves, to honour our humanity." Ndlovu is a frequent collaborator of Patrick Bongoy.
