Designer Jesse Ede favours exposing and highlighting the organic nature of his mediums – manipulating them to expose the contrast between the material itself and the man-made processes that form them into collectible furniture. His work for Southern Guild is the outcome of a great deal of experimentation with open-cast aluminium smelting.
Describing himself as “a designer, maker, crafter and artist”, he grew up in a creative household that inspired an appreciation for craftsmanship. Much of his life has been spent in workshops and studios, allowing him to naturally acquire a vast range of skills. Jesse worked and travelled the world for eight years before moving back to Cape Town, spending some time honing his carpentry skills while working for an Antiguan boat-building company.
Jesse has exhibited his collectible design work with Southern Guild regularly since taking part in A New Wave in 2016. His work has been presented at Design Miami/ (2016 and 2017) and Christie’s First Open Design Auction (2017), and will be shown at The Salon Art + Design (2018).
