Conrad Hicks is an artist and blacksmith who forges metal into implements. His pieces are all functional, be it a message in a piece of sculpture or a beautiful tool that carries the object into a realm which is beyond its initial functional dimension. Hicks uses his tools and tool-making process to investigate the artist/human existential relationship with his material environment in an unintuitive and biological way, in order to access his primordial, instinctive understanding of perfect form. Hicks studied sculpture in the 1980s, working in the art and restoration field before founding his business in 1991. This facilitated his return to, and rediscovery of, the expressive potential that comes from forging steel and copper sculpture. His forge is housed in The Bijou, an old Art Deco cinema in Observatory, Cape Town.
